Geo-spatial warning system Nisyros volcano, Greece (GEOWARN)

Summary

Dormant volcanos situated in regions of high geodynamic unrest represent a constant thread. Surveillance studies of volcanos require monitoring of geodetic, seismic, and geochemical data. The goal of GEOWARN is to develop a web based software that combines this data with topographic information, satellite images and multimedia information.

The GEOWARN software allows to interactively compare various data sets from different disciplines, and thus gain new insights into the internal processes of volcanic regions. The ease of the graphical user interface in combination with the versatility of different cartographic representations and functionalities allows to analyze the different data sets and to discover data correlations in order to better investigate volcanic hazards.

The volcanic island of Nisyros (South Aegean Sea) suffered a seismic crisis between 1996 and 1998. It offers the ideal environment to compile and analyze a multi-parametric data set. The approach of GEOWARN is transferred to other volcanic regions (Vesuvius and Phlegrean fields in Italy).
